BIO
Linda was born in Canada and has been drawing and painting from childhood. She became a teacher and lived in the US to study life drawing and sculpture at Yale University. Next came a move to Nova Scotia, Canada and a degree course in fine art at St. Xavier University.
Moving to London, UK in 1976, life drawing and sculpture, painting and drawing continued at Camden Art Centre.
On moving to a farm in Hampshire, Linda painted, taught, and developed ceramic sculpture skills, while raising horses and children.
She exhibited at the Mall Gallery in London as a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists and at many local venues but the subject matter of paintings was not exclusively equine, or exclusively in oils. Often described as a versatile artist, Linda became expert in using and teaching watercolours, pastels, and acrylics.
Three years in residence at Project Workshops in Hampshire offered a larger audience and a huge studio. Large commissions and regular exhibitions ensued. Here she taught life drawing classes as well as drawing and painting.
Since the move to Walden Studio in a woodland near Salisbury, both subject matter and painting methods have changed and developed. Recent paintings are available at local exhibitions and through Linda’s website.
Linda’s paintings are in many private collections throughout the South of England and in North America.
MY ART
Since moving to a wet and wooded area near Salisbury a few years ago with its similarity to Northern Ontario cottage country, my work has moved on. Once I had painted enough realistic trees and lakes here, I moved on to less literal ways of working and seeing, allowing my feel for the place to show in the brushwork and palette.
It has been exciting to find myself experimenting again. There is new satisfaction and interest in these expressive techniques. I have combined my knowledge of how composition and colour harmony work and then let intuition guide. Where line and form were central to my previous work, colour and balance take precedence now.
The latest acrylic paints and inks work well on canvas, paper, and panels. Free from the restrictive boundaries of subject, I use a fine liner and oil pastels, soft pastels, pencils, pens and charcoal to pull elements together or emphasise detail and create a diversion. My ideas have a new outlet.
I will still grab my charcoal to draw a portrait, dog, horse or whatever has caught my interest. Check out my website to see earlier work in oils, charcoal, pastels, watercolour etc.

We met Linda some years ago at Project Workshops near Quarley and bought a small woodland scene painting. We visited her new Walden studio during Salisbury’s 2022 Art trail. We like lots of her work, and love the way her style has evolved over the years. Discussing Linda’s inspiration for each work and the stories behind them is a bonus : Air of Heaven, Blackbird and Autumn Moon now grace our home and bring us joy each time we look at them. We plan to visit again and are likely to buy more of her work. Linda is patient with ditherers and always happy to discuss what inspires her to paint.
Mr. and Mrs. D Thornton
I first saw Linda Powell’s paintings at a friend’s house. They were amazing so when I saw her paintings at the Hillier Garden Exhibition, I bought a still life of fruit and a landscape in watercolour. They are classic and will never age. I love them to this day. Recently I was able to buy a more recent painting in oils from her studio at Walden Cottage. Thank you Linda, it is exactly right in the dining room.
