SALISBURY CITY COUNCIL
BIO
Within Salisbury and the surrounding area members of the Salisbury Group of Artists have been making and exhibiting art since the 1940’s.
In the mid 1940’s, the Arts Council set up a cultural organisation known as the Salisbury Society of Arts. One of its functions was to arrange for an Art Exhibition annually. The contributors were both members and non-members and their submitted works were judged by well known artists and these included Edward Seago and Henry Lamb.
Later the Art section broke away to be formed as the Salisbury Group of Artists and over the years the organisation has continued to flourish with the emphasis keeping to the original concept to provide opportunities for members to exhibit.
Salisbury Group of Artists now has a membership of more than 150. Our members are beginners, leisure painters, amateur and professional artists.
Our membership fees are as follows:
- £20 adult (per year)
- £30 Joint member/Family (per year)
- Young member (under 21) £10 (per year)
If you would like to join our friendly and busy local art group, please contact our Membership Secretary or complete the membership form, which you can download from our website - click here.
OUR GROUP
Each year our group exhibits and sells paintings and other art at annual exhibitions, runs regular and inspiring workshops with experienced artists, and holds drawing days, including life classes.
Fridays are the days that there is the opportunity of attending the popular ‘Friday Art’, where people of all ages and skills come together and, well - make art!
Around the City too you may often catch sight of ‘The Salisbury Sketchers’, pads and pencils at the ready sketching and recording Salisbury life and landscapes.
We welcome all enquiries and have listed a few contacts below you may find helpful:

SGA's stand at Salisbury Arts Scene's monthly outdoor events - come along and meet us!
"I joined the Salisbury Group of Artists a few years ago when I returned to live in my home town of Salisbury. Keen to meet members of the artistic community a friend recommended SGA, and I am pleased that I joined the group. I have made many good friendships, and enjoy meeting up with other members at the various events, workshops and exhibitions that are organised. I particularly enjoy the Salisbury Sketchers branch and the opportunity to sketch around Salisbury with other like minded artists. Having belonged to other art societies when I lived in Dorset, I can truly say that SGA is one of the best from every aspect."

"I joined the SGA 5 years ago after hearing about their exciting programme of events from a friend in another Art club. I went along to the AGM after joining and found everyone I met very welcoming and interested in how I might like to take part. As an inexperienced painter I was a little shy of exhibiting but soon realised the group is made up of many ages and levels of experience or those just starting out. What gave me confidence was that everyone was enthusiastic to encourage each other to show their work. I’ve since find out we often buy each other’s work too! I have hugely enjoyed the camaraderie of exhibition times, the excitement of group RA visits and the personal development provided by our wide range of artists workshops. I am now a proud member of the exhibitions team."
